Green Room (2015)

Rotten Tomatoes: 90%

Box Office: 3 million USD

My Rating: 7/10

Description: A punk band called the Ain't Rights is on tour when they find out their gig has been cancelled. When Tad (David W. Thompson), the radio host they're staying with, tells them about a bar where they can perform as the opening act, the band agrees to go before discovering that the bar is full of neo-Nazi skinheads. To make matters worse, the first song the Ain't Rights perform is a cover of "Nazi Punks, Fuck Off", which doesn't exactly make them popular with the crowd. While in the green room, they witness a murder, and the skinheads realize they need to kill the witnesses.

My Thoughts: While watching the movie I went from being excited, to neutral, to surprised, to disappointed, to surprised again in a good way, before finally thinking, "This was actually a pretty good movie." It's scary and tense with very many jump scares, and it had a great use of gore without overdoing it. The only word I can use to describe the gritty punk aesthetic is "cool". The owner of the skinhead bar is played by Sir Patrick Stewart, which I was very excited about, but I think his performance was one of the movie's only shortfalls. I imagined something terrifying, but what we got was Professor American History X. While all the other neo-Nazis are merciless and violent, his character felt much too technical and only really concerned with pulling the strings behind the scenes. Of course, this is typically how it plays out with neo-Nazi groups in real life, but it doesn't make for an interesting movie character. The only other thing you should be careful about is if you're especially sensitive to animal cruelty. Besides that, if you're interested in an awesome indie horror movie about the punk scene, you should definitely check it out. With all the twists and turns, I can promise you that you'll never be bored.
